“Alternative Perspectives,” the only radio show in Atlanta specifically for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender audience, recently received a $5,000 grant from the Lloyd E. Russell Foundation.
“I am grateful to the Lloyd E. Russell Foundation for their vision, for the caring of the community and the support for the work in the GLBTQ community,” said Betty Couvertier, creator and producer of the radio show, which airs Tuesday evenings on the community-run WRFG 89.3 FM radio station.
“The donation will enable WRFG to literally keep the lights on for a while longer and after 35 years of broadcasting we can continue to bring progressive information with programming such as ‘Alternative Perspectives,’” she said.
“Alternative Perspectives” includes such programming as “She Speaks” with Lakara Foster, “Pride & Politics” with Anare Holmes, and a new segment, “Same Gender Marriage Blast” with Ghetto Gospel. On the third Tuesday of each month, the show features “T-Talk Tuesdays” devoted to transgender issues, and the show also features an ongoing series, “Faithbased & Politics.”
The grant’s namesake, Lloyd E. Russell, owned the former gay bar The Cove. He was a colorful gay activist who in 1998 unsuccessfully ran for governor of Georgia as a Libertarian. He died in March 2006.
