Jay Brannan, a singer/songwriter also known for his appearance in the John Cameron Mitchell film, “Shortbus,” is set to appear in Atlanta as part of a 10-city inaugural headlining tour. The singer is on the road in support of his first full album, “Goddamned.”
Brannan says fans can look forward to a laid-back show.
“I try to keep my shows pretty informal,” he says. “I just like to show up and kind of engage the audience. I don’t like to have to do all the work!”
“Goddamned” is self-produced, and as his first full studio effort, carries a richer, more produced sound than on his previous singles and EPs. The album does, however, preserve the heartfelt, emotional lyrics that don’t shy away from Brannan’s sexual orientation.
Brannan first broke through for gay audiences with his starring role in 2006’s “Shortbus,” an independent film that made headlines for its depictions of real sex onscreen. From John Cameron Mitchell, the creator of “Hedwig & the Angry Inch,” the film also featured two of Brannan’s songs, including the audience-favorite “Soda Shop.”
“I got involved with ‘Shortbus’ because I believed in the film and what John wanted to do with it,” Brannan says. “I came from kind of a conservative, religious upbringing where you don’t really talk about things like sex. It’s kind of a taboo subject, and I think that leads to a lot of problems.”
