A pair of lyrical authors make appearances across Atlanta next week to advocate for peace and progressive art.
Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Georgia native Alice Walker returns home to deliver the keynote speech at the May 6 “Mother’s Day for Peace” event hosted by Atlanta Women’s Action for New Directions at Spelman College.
Also on May 6, queer hip hop artist Tim’m West appears at Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse to read from his new book “Flirting,” a poetic memoir about girls, boys, danger and politics. West’s music and writing usually include a level of social consciousness, something he is trying to foster among other artists in Atlanta through this initiative, which is similar to his “The Fronch Porch” series in Washington, D.C.
“Beyond the art that I do, given my vast experience creating in several communities — DC, Brooklyn, Oakland, Raleigh Durham — it’s always been important for me to be a focal point for bringing arts-activist communities together,” West says. “I’m clear that the community-building aspect of arts-activism is part of my work. In LGBT communities, it’s especially important to connect our creativity with the array of rights we’re still working to achieve.”
