WITH OPEN PLAY NOW TAKING A BREATHER, the competition at the Hotlanta Volleyball Association’s twice-a-week gatherings gets a little more serious.

HVA opened its league play this week, offering team competition for beginners to more advanced players for the next two months. On Tuesdays, the league expects four intermediate teams and seven advanced teams to play, while its recreation league on Fridays includes six teams.

For the 150-member HVA, the new season also serves as a warm-up for teams wanting to compete in the North American Gay Volleyball Association championships in May and HVA’s own tournament, the Hotlanta Classic XVII, in July, according to Jeff Rooks, HVA’s commissioner.

“We are always open to meeting new folks and welcoming additional players into the league,” Rooks said. “Fans can come watch as well to see the level of play on either day.”

During the spring season, teams play twice a night and help referee a match during its break. The season stretches into early April.

DESPITE DROPPING THEIR FIRST TWO MATCHES, the Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club has high hopes for its home opener on Saturday against the Birmingham Vulcans. The team, stymied by injuries, hopes to return to full force this weekend, according to Bullet Manale, the club’s president.

“We’ve had a couple of folks out and we are hoping to get them back this week,” Manale said.

After opening with losses to the High Country Rugby Football Club and the Huntsville Rugby Club, Manale said the team needs to build fitness and improve tackling as the 10-match season continues.

THE HOTLANTA SOFTBALL LEAGUE LOOKS TO fill the rosters of its nearly four-dozen teams as it moves closer to the start of its 27th season. To help, the league hosts two upcoming sign up events, including one on Sunday and another on Feb. 24.

From there, the league takes up Spring Training with its annual clinic on March 9. HSL opens its season on March 30.
