‘Stand’ lets us down
Broadway’s Idina Menzel releases a mediocre album that doesn’t showcase her formidable talents

Idina Menzel has a lot going for her — she’s achingly gorgeous, a Tony Award adorns her mantel, and her high-caliber voice makes many an aspiring vocalist envious.

Despite these positive traits, her album “I Stand” could make any self-respecting fan of musical theater head for the nearest emergency exit.

It seems like it’d be hard to knock a woman with such an impressive resume — she won a Tony Award for her performance in “Wicked,” and wowed audiences as a bisexual in the original cast of “Rent” and its movie remake. But before even placing the CD in the stereo, the song titles flash like a warning — “Gorgeous,”
“Enemy,” “I Feel Everything,” “Perfume and Promises” and “Forever,” to name a few.

This would be next to the Clay Aiken Christmas record in terms of what to get your cheesy, slightly depressing aunt for her birthday.

The production value could also make a diva-lover cringe. The echoing of Menzel’s voice over the beginning synth notes of “Better to Have Loved” should have been kept as straight forward singing. It does have some redeeming qualities, though. Her voice oozes smokiness, and she shows off her range well.

The title track, “I Stand,” is supposed to be an empowering anthem for women.

“I stand for the power to change / I live for the perfect day / I love ‘til it hurts like crazy / I hope for a hero to save me,” she sings.

But do these things have anything to do with each other? What, really, do you stand for, Idina? She’s fierce, she’s a lady … but she’s in distress and wants someone to come sweep her off her feet. Mixed messages, indeed.

The first single, “Brave,” doesn’t rock — this lady isn’t in her Kelly Clarkson-empowered phase yet. For those who can’t claim to love every song off of the “Rent” soundtrack, “Brave” is that one track you always skip over. Menzel tries to create an anthem for herself and a showcase for her voice, but all you can focus on are the painfully cheesy lyrics.

“This is the moment I stand here on my own / This is my rite of passage that somehow leads me home / And I might be afraid / But it’s my turn to be brave,” she sings. It makes you wonder if Idina’s life has really been that hard.

The biggest offense on the album is a track called “Gorgeous.” Menzel is exactly that, and no one’s debating it. Her long, wavy brown hair frames her deep brown eyes. She has a plump pucker and a killer bod. So when someone as pretty as Idina decides to sing about how beautiful she is, listeners have a right to be annoyed.

“When all of the beauty turns to pain / When all of the madness falls like rain / As long as we crash and we collide / We will be gorgeous, you and I,” she says.

In addition to the nonsensical lyrics, she’s already gorgeous. So shut up.

Menzel’s got her hands full these days. She’s appearing in movies and on soundtracks as well as releasing this album. Maybe she should hone her talents and focus on the monster ballads reserved for the stage instead of trying to shove “hopeful” messages down the throats of catchy music enthusiasts.

“I Stand” is proof that musical theater doesn’t always translate well to pop radio.

First of all, professionals should not get praise for trying really hard. This is the music industry, not high school. Secondly, a listener should not have to memorize the artists' biography to get something out of their songs. I was hopeful about this album, and it is a let down. The lyrics (and song titles) are silly. She sings every song in the same style, which just makes for a ridiculously boring album. 2 or 3 songs showcasing her belt would have been more that enough.

Yeah I hope you put this article at the top of your portfolio. To ensure you never get to write for any more than another lame edition after SOVO.

While I respect that this is your profession, I wholeheartedly disagree with this review. There are a lot of people out there, myself inluded, who find inspiration in Idina's lyrics. To say that her cd has let her fans down is crazy, esp. since there are many on here who are amazed by this album,& are very proud of her! She put her heart and soul into this album, which would be clear if you had actually listened to it. Fyi before she did theater she sang at weddings-where they do sing pop songs

Your poorly researched "review" is a joke. If you had researched Idina at all, (or even listened to the lyrics) you would know that her song "Gorgeous" is not about her looks at all. Furthermore, judging an album by the titles of the songs is a pitiful cop out. Idina is extremely talented and her lovely album deserves a better music critic to review it. You are a "cheesy" hack.

I don't feel compelled to completely bash your review because I figure you were stuck with writing this because music reviewers don't write like this. If they hate the material, they will at least credit the singer for trying and breaking out or vice versa. This is definitely not apprent in your writing. I wouldn't call you a music critic that's for sure. Before bashing someone else's vision for what they stand in, you should get clear on your own first.

I agree with everyone else on here. I don't think you actually listened to the songs.I think that anyone who writes a review about Idina's album should at least know who they are writing about. A lot of the things you write are completely untrue, childish and this whole review is downright ridiculous. By the way: did you not know that lyrics aren't really meant to be taken literally?

OH and btw, you sound extremely bitter and immature while talking about Gorgeous. Are you some 17 year old intern? Because you obviously have no perspective or sense of professionality.

This review sounds like you don't know anything about Idina. Actually, all her musical theatre followers love the songs they've heard so far. Do your research before writing about someone, because Idina said she wasn't going to be all "musical theatre-y" because she didn't want to be pigeon-holed. she said she wants to expand herself as an artist. in I Stand, you can stand for completely opposite principals. it shows how people have the inner struggle and both side's ideals end up in your head.

Lyrics to music are not usually meant to be taken literally. "Gorgeous" is about her relationship with her husband, not their actual physical appearance. The people who write comments like these, the under educated people, are the ones who give reason for why Idina does not like to look on the internet for comments about her work and herself. We know this person has the story wrong, it is just simply tragic that they are bad mouthing someone whom they, quite obviously, do not understand.

I find it amusing that you would take the time to review an album that has yet to be released for another four days. Nice try though, but I don't think anyone is going to buy what you have to say.

I TOTALLY and COMPLETELY DISAGREE with this critic! In fact I agree with everyone before me! This album IS AMAZING! Idina writes from her heart and therefore is able to touch people like no other! Her music bring joy to so many. This critic obviously has NO taste or class talking about her, and her music the way that they do! I suggest finding a job you're good at. This is NOT it! Idina you are loved beyond measure, don't listen to a word of this CRAP, you continue to make us proud everyday! ILY

Ok, I have a few things to say. One, you are obviously new to critiquing anything because you contradict yourself all over the place. You also need to use more professional words than "plump pucker" and "killer bod." You also need to learn to quote right. And do try listening to an album before talking crap about it. You will avoid making yourself look like an idiot! Dee. BTW, I Stand is my favorite track on this album

I agree with veronicamae and wickederin - had you actually listened to the album you would have hopefully understood that the songs have meanings that go deeper than what you may think because you believe that the titles are cheesy. Her songs have touched people and you obviously do not have an analytical bone in your body because all you did was look at the songs and judge then based on titles and lyrics without really thinking about what they mean.

I find it disappointing that there are people who write for "literary" sources who obviously fail to comprehend the intricacies of the written word. Language is about interpretation: connotation vs. denotation. This album exemplifies Idina's understanding of the levels that language works on. She connects with her fans in a way you seem unable to understand. You should study the minute ways language can be manipulated, perhaps then you will understand why Idina's music resounds with so many.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree wholeheartedly with this review. I happen to know that the songs which have already been released (especially "Brave") have touched tons of people with their music and lyrics. I have to wonder if you understand the idea of "metaphor", because many of the lyrics in these songs don't need to be taken quite as literally as you just took them. I agree with veronicamae--listen to an album before you review it.

I can't help but wonder if you actually listened to the songs on this album before you wrote this. You care more about the titles & lyrics at face value than the context they're used in. "Gorgeous" is about loving whoever you want, regardless of what other people say - gay, straight, whatever. She's not saying "omg I'm so pretty let me sing a song about it." BTW, you sound bitter that she is, in fact, gorgeous. Hmm... I recommend actually listening to an album next time before you review it.
