Gay old people need their own Atlanta bar

Re “When we grow old” (news, March 2):

Where do gay men go when they reach retirement age? Lately they seem to be hanging out at Blake’s. Isn’t there an old dude’s bar they can hang out at?

At least gay groups are good for something

Re “HRC leader: ATL dollars help ‘national agenda’” (news, March 2)

I’m not sure how effective any of the local or national gay rights groups are in improving my life, but they sure seem to be prolific at finding work for Cathy Woolard.

‘Just like straights’ strategy paved way for adoption case

Re “Hate crimes and self-hate” (Editorial by Laura Douglas-Brown, March 2):

Criticize Sara Wheeler all you want, but it’s the “we want to be just like the straight people” default mentality, now entrenched in the gay press, that leads to her litigating her family values in the court. She is emblematic of what people like Laura Douglas-Brown advocate for at every turn. Think, “If only we could be the same as they are”: and this is what we get. Pew research aside, LGBT people are NOT winning anything but a beating in the polls, in the courts and especially in Georgia, because not only is aping the oppressor a futile strategy, but it is more provocative to the heterosexual status quo, they don’t want to accept any notion that we are just like them. A winning strategy would be common sense: we are not just like straights and we aren’t trying to be just like them.

Proving once again that just because you can pop out a baby, doesn’t mean you are qualified to raise a child. This is why gay men make great parents — they appreciate the special gift that they have been given.

Cooper controversy proves gay celebs just can’t win

Re “Ironic that Cooper asked Chesney ‘the question’” (Sound Off, March 2):

I am so sick of gays (bitter media queens) bashing Anderson Cooper for not saying “I’m gay.” No one, and I mean no one has the right to tell anyone how to live their life. You call him a “coward” — I would rather be a coward that believes in helping everyone (not just gays) than a poster boy. Kudos to Anderson and a big ole’ bitch slap to bitchy bloggers.

Up to the point when Cooper asked Kenny Chesney about his sexuality, I thought Cooper’s sexuality was his private business. He crossed the line with his hypocrisy. Gay or straight, “360” isn’t very interesting.

I think you just need to leave him alone. Coming out is a big deal for a lot of people. He’ll do it in his own time and in his own way.

Pot less dangerous than alcohol, cigarettes

Re “Study: Marijuana helps HIV neurological pain” (news, Feb. 23):

Marijuana is the only reason my partner didn’t waste away during his cancer treatment. The current drugs don’t do what marijuana can safely and effectively do. The current policies are outdated, ridiculous and completely based on fear tactics. I wish those who didn’t have life threatening illness would step up and help us in the fight to legalize the medical use of this drug. Cigarettes and alcohol have no purpose and kill millions, and yet they are legal. Ridiculous.
