Editors’ Choice: Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative
Who can resist a lovable puppy or kitten? Certainly not the superheroes at PALS Atlanta who understand that sometimes, a furry friend can be the best therapy, and who help look out for the loyal buddies when their humans are no longer able. Throw in a monthly bingo bash and PALS is unbeatable. Second place from our readers went to Joining Hearts, with third place going to the Atlanta Freedom Bands.
Editors’ Choice: Victory for the World Church
Where some other churches hide behind closed doors during the annual Atlanta Pride parade, the bright red doors at St. Mark United Methodist Church are decidedly open — with support, well-wishers, and marchers pouring out from the very gay-friendly membership. Second place went to St. John’s Lutheran Church and third to First Metropolitan Community Church of Atlanta.

Best Gay Sports Team: Atlanta Bucks Rugby (File photo) |
Editors’ Choice: Decatur Women’s Softball League
Founded in the summer of 2003, the Atlanta Bucks quickly rose to prominence among Atlanta’s numerous gay sports teams, standing out as a team that plays well both on and off the pitch. Not content to just face opponents at matches around the country, the Bucks made strides into philanthropy with its first annual Purple Dress Run this year. Second place from our readers went to the National Flag Football League of Atlanta, with third place going to the Atlanta Rainbow Trout.
Editors’ Choice: East Atlanta Village
Despite signs of change, Midtown remains the undisputed center of gay life in Atlanta, from Piedmont Park during the city’s two Gay Pride festivals, to the many gay bars continuing to fight the good fight against complete gentrification. East Atlanta Village muscled its way into second, with Decatur finishing third.
Editors’ Choice: Glenwood Park
Trendy shops, suddenly chic and well-appointed homes, new bars — yep, sounds like the once rough-edged East Atlanta has fallen under the spell of the many lesbians and gay men who have made the area their new home over the last decade. The For-Sale signs and sweet deals in Grant Park and East Point won’t linger much longer either, if SoVo readers have their say.
Editors’ Choice, Special Night: MLK Weekend at Traxx
Editors’ Choice, Best Benefit: Toy Party
Joining Hearts celebrated its 20th anniversary this year by packing the Piedmont Park pool with hotties dancing to the beats of DJ Joe Gauthreaux. It left everyone wanting more, so there’s no surprise readers loved it too. This year's benefit raised more than $82,500 for Jerusalem House and AID Atlanta. Second place for Special Night/Party went to My Sisters’ Room, with Masquerade’s Grind and Spark coming in third. Second place for Special Night went to Toy Party, with third place going to the Femme Mafia Masquerade.
Editors’ Choice: Atlanta Pride
Some 300,000 attendees can't be wrong. The three-day Atlanta Pride festival is once again our readers' choice for the city's best gay event, and SoVo editors can't disagree. From the poignant AIDS Quilt display, to the swank VIP party, political Dyke March and massive Pride Parade, Atlanta Pride offers something for every stripe in the gay rainbow. Readers voted Joining Hearts second and the Toy Party third.

Readers' Choice, Best Bookstore: Philip Rafshoon's Outwrite (Photo by R.O. Youngblood) |
Editors’ Choice: Charis Books & More
With appearances from serious literary talent like Armistead Maupin and Sarah Waters, as well as celebrity authors including Jim McGreevey, John Amaechi and Lance Bass, gay Atlantans count on Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse to give us not only something to read, but something to talk about. Second place went to feminist/lesbian haven Charis Books & More; Brushstrokes was voted third.
