HOUSTON (AP) — The impending parole of two of the people convicted in the 1991 gang beating and stabbing death of a gay banker has prompted the victim’s mother to ask for current photos of the men. Nancy Rodriguez said she wanted the photos so she will be able to recognize them if they should come to her door. Paul Broussard was 27 when he and two friends were attacked as they left a gay nightclub in the Montrose area of Houston. His friends escaped with minor injuries. Broussard was beaten, kicked and stabbed to death. Ten teens were convicted in his death. Five received probation and one has since completed his sentence. Jaime Aguirre, 34, and his brother, Javier Aguirre, 32, are set to be released later this month. They face deportation to Mexico upon their release but Rodriguez fears they could return to this country. Leandro Ramirez, 32, is to be released on parole in March. Jon Buice, who was sentenced to 45 years, faces a parole hearing in October. Michelle Lyons, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, said Rodriguez will be given the photos she requested.

Gay Ga. man indicted after allegedly seeking sex with teen

NEWNAN, Ga. — An HIV-positive former Emory medical resident was indicted last week in Coweta County in Georgia on seven felony charges stemming from his Nov. 2 arrest after allegedly trying to lure a 15-year-old boy he met on Myspace.com to have sex with him. The Coweta grand jury heard the case against Adam Lebowitz, 47, of Decatur, Ga., on Jan. 3, but the indictment wasn’t revealed to the Coweta prosecutor until the next day, according to District Attorney Pete Skandalakis. A spring trial date is expected. Lebowitz, who is gay, was indicted in Coweta County on charges of criminal attempt to commit aggravated child molestation, criminal attempt to sexually exploit a child and criminal attempt to commit statutory rape and other related charges. Coweta County law enforcement set up a sting at the boy’s Newnan home on Nov. 2 and arrested Lebowitz when he arrived at the boy’s home with condoms, lubricants and sleeping bags in his vehicle “with the intent to engage in sexual relations,” according to court documents.

SEATTLE (AP) — A man has been convicted of fatally beating and stabbing a Seattle business owner whose body was found wrapped in blankets in his red Porsche, although the jury couldn’t decide on a motive. Michael Saga Maiava, 24, was convicted last week of first-degree murder following slightly more than a day of deliberations in King County Superior Court. He faces as much as 34 years in prison for the attack on Kevin Shaw, 44. Prosecutors said the two men apparently met on a telephone chat line for gays shortly before Shaw was attacked with an ice pick or similar device.

Second man faces trial
in deaths of 2 Fla. gays

TAMPA, Fla. — The trial of a Florida man linked to the killing of a gay man three years ago is underway here. Scott Schweickert, 41, is charged with conspiracy and assisting in a drug-facilitated crime of violence, the St. Petersburg Times reported Monday. Three years ago, a passerby discovered a body wrapped in a sheet in the back of a Jeep Cherokee parked in a remote area near an apartment complex. Michael Wachholtz, who was gay, was found dead and another young gay man, Jason Galehouse, vanished about the same time. Steven Lorenzo, whom prosecutors claim was Schweickert’s conspirator, was found guilty in 2005 of nine counts of administering GHB, a central nervous system depressant, with the intent of committing violence. He was sentenced to 200 years in jail. Schweickert’s trial will rely mostly on statements he made to authorities and the grand jury in which he said Lorenzo persuaded him to help cut up Galehouse’s body and dump it in trash bins around the city. Schweickert said Lorenzo killed Wachholtz the following night.
