A job fair, entertainment and networking sessions are on tap for the Atlanta Day Fair, the first event produced by FAMnation, an Atlanta-based internet community for “LGBTQI blacks and Latinos and their admirers.”
“This is how we’re going to introduce FAMnation to the world, and to the minority communities,” said L.A. JohnTre, organizer of the non-profit, which sprang to life during Atlanta’s 2006 Black Gay Pride festivities.
The name of the organization reflects how gay people are sometimes referred to as “family” by other gay people.
“It’s a big family nation of us,” JohnTre said.
The Day Fair, which is free, will be held inside the downtown Days Inn on Spring Street. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with a job fair, where applications and representatives from companies like MCI, Enterprise Rental Car and UPS will be available for attendees seeking new work opportunities.
The job fair will be followed by a two-hour business networking brunch, which JohnTre said was designed to bring out the growing community of entrepreneurs among gay people of color.
The afternoon and evening hours are earmarked for artistic expression and entertainment, including a film festival and spoken word poetry performance. “Identity Labels in the Community,” a panel discussion moderated by the feminist group Femme Mafia, is also scheduled for the afternoon.
