Re “The dissing of Black Gay Pride” (op-ed by Jasmyne Cannick, June 3):
As long as people like Jasmyne Cannick perpetuate the notion that Gay Pride festivals are simply for whites, then we will continue to see a rift in the gay community. Gay Pride celebrations are multi-racial and have never segregated themselves. Why do blacks need their own Gay Pride? We are all gay, and we should share in our pride regardless of race.
Re “Metro appeals loss of liquor license” (news, June 3):
If there was any doubt that madame Mayor Shirley Franklin has decided she no longer needs the gay vote, this pretty much seals it. The gay bars are finally gone from Peachtree Street. I am sure that she has made her key contributors very happy. After all, we can’t have such things around the corner from the new symphony hall, now can we?
Re “Going all the way” (cover story, May 27):
How lovely to see “Sex on the first date” broadcast from every newspaper box in Atlanta. If we didn’t look like sexual perverts to everyone outside the gay community, we made sure they hadn’t made a mistake with that nonsense.
Re “Gay author says firing linked to upcoming book” (news, June 3):
Rich Merritt is a shameless opportunist trying to drum up publicity for his book and money.
Re “Keep your eyes on our ‘allies’” (editorial by Chris Crain, June 3):
To be fair, it’s not just NGLTF that continues to fall victim to Howard Dean’s siren song. Atlanta’s country club gays ponied up $2,500 a person for a private reception and dinner where they kissed his ring and feigned ignorance about his “real” record of support for the gay community.
Re “TV series ignores ‘the B word’” (Sound Off, May 27):
Perhaps the person blasting “The L Word” didn’t know, but Jennifer Beals is black, and so is Pam Grier, two of the main characters. To be completely honest, going out to a club or bar, I rarely see any black lesbians, mainly black gay men. So, stop throwing the stupid race card!
Re “HIV-positive man arrested for having unsafe sex” (news, May 20):
What disturbs me most about this is the apparent lack of responsibility on the part of the guy bringing the charges. If I had met someone online, in a bathhouse, a bar or at church, I don’t think that within five months I would have unprotected anal sex. Did he honestly believe that because his boyfriend said he was “drug/disease free” that he could bank on that? Guys online lie all the time about their weight, height and penis size. What is different about HIV status?
Re “The death of femme” (column by Jennifer Vanasco, May 27):
This is a must-read article for any lesbian. Who really knows the “how” of these things? At 43, I am completely caught up in being more femme (on the sporty side) and feeling strong attractions mostly toward more femme women. I always say that I like you if you are not “prissy” or excessively girly. Loved the article — please share more!
